Buff Luck

Chapter 1: Mag luck

On a cold rain swept shuttle platform, Commander Mark Rainer waited for the chief to sort out the malfunction in the mag locks that had held him up for over one hour. He began to turn his thoughts to the myriad of things that a new first officer had to do.

For the millionth time Cmdr Rainer glanced at his time piece willing the numbers to turn, waiting for the go. Then out of the corner of his eye he saw a woman he had not noticed before, she was holding on to a few cases, and looked very tired, not that that was unusual but what caught his attention most was the striking red hair that reminded him of his favourite ancient movie star.

There were still no signs of the platform being repaired any time soon and with nothing else to do he wandered over and softly spoke to the woman, so softly in fact she did not hear him at first, she looked up to see the discomfort on his face and asked what she could do for him. Smiling his best worst smile Mark introduced himself and asked if she would like to get a drink while they waited.

To Marks surprise the woman was pleased to talk and the smile he got back more than made up for the time spent wasted on the platform, she said her name was Emily and that she was transferring to the fleet headquarters counselling service as a administrator. All the bags were her new kit. Pads and other items that she did not want to risk going through a transporter that sounded familiar Mark thought.

Before they could go for the drink a cheer rose up from the rest of the people on the platform, the mag locks had been released and the shuttle was ready to leave. The pilot and crew chief both grinned sheepishly and took a bow.

Mark thought to himself that that would be it and that she would go to another part of the shuttle. Not that it should be a problem however how would it look if anyone saw the new XO of the Typhoon chasing after a woman he had just met. As he sat down Emily sat next to him. “She must have read my mind” he thought. “I did sort of anyway” she said, and proceeded to explain that she was Betazed.

“Just my luck, it brings a new meaning to seeing me coming eh?” Mark said out loud. Well there was no point in thinking it.

“Well at least I took your mind off the Typhoon for a few moments” Emily replied.

Mark was about to ask how she knew, then thought better of it.

To be continued.
